We all need somewhere to jot notes … some of you take to your phones or iPads, others prefer an old fashioned note book. Brides need somewhere to store supplier details, work out their seating plan and budgets, keep samples and business cards ….
As a bride and wedding blogger, when Megan was planning her own wedding, she recognised a need for a wedding organiser which simply and seamlessly incorporated wedding planning in a bride-to-be’s everyday life.
She couldn’t find anything available that incorporated a day-to-day diary, so of course … Kiwi ingenuity kicked in and she set about creating one.
The result is the Little White Book, a functional planner, and a treasured keepsake.

There are few things that can offer you a more glowing appearance than the results and feeling that comes from an effective facial treatment. Cared-for skin has a way of making you look restored and feeling fabulous.
Too often I hear that brides are apprehensive to have facial treatments before their big day because of the fear that a breakout might occur. As healthy as your skin feels following a facial, this is a common concern – so much so that it can be a key reason in deciding not to have a facial treatment in the days leading up to a big event, like a wedding day.
As you know, there’s a lot of planning required for a wedding day, and your skin requires the same amount of consideration and preparation as the rest of your plans in order to achieve the positive results that give a bride a confident charm. If you really want to get your skin looking the best you can, you’ll need to start a simple and consistent skincare routine as far in advance as possible. Along with an uncomplicated skincare routine, these secret weapons are all you need for picture-perfect skin on your big day.
A facial is one of the best ways to take care of your skin, especially when it’s given by an experienced and knowledgeable therapist who is fastidious and passionate about their work. Choose a professional therapist who is trained to provide expert advice and who can offer the most effective skin treatments available, customised to your age and skin condition. The right therapist will be committed to helping you overcome your skincare concerns, and inspire noticeable change to achieve your skincare goals.
A facial treatment should begin with a thorough consultation which will enable the therapist to prescribe a course of treatment suited specifically for your skin. The consultation should include discussion around your skin concerns, skincare you are currently using, your diet and lifestyle habits, medications and supplements that you are taking. These aspects all affect the condition of your skin and, consequently, the treatment chosen and the correct skincare to be prescribed. Adopting the right skincare regime leading up to your wedding or special event is the secret to having a ‘no breakout’ day.
I know, as do you now, that the myth will remain. Do not let that spoil one of the little pleasures of getting married … the pleasure of spending time with your beauty professional to get your skin radiant and glowing so you’ll be at your very best all day.

FENDI sealed once more its profound and long-lasting bond with Rome, by choosing its hometown to celebrate the 90 years anniversary of the Maison.
The event started on 7 July late in the afternoon with a private cocktail at the San Luca Academy inside Palazzo Carpegna, an historical Roman Palazzo hosting an artists’ association founded in 1593, just a few steps away from the Trevi Fountain, where it was launched – as a worldwide preview – the FENDI ROMA book. The book, conceived to celebrate 90 years of the Maison, its history, identity and the profound link with the city of Rome, has been presented in an exclusive set up inside the exhibition area where its photographic images were displayed as in an art gallery.
The celebration continued at the glorious Fontana di Trevi, for a never seen before fashion show with the Legends and Fairytales Haute Fourrure Collection, designed by Karl Lagerfeld, once more an example of the unique craftsmanship, daring creativity and expression of the excellence of the Roman Maison. The Trevi fountain’s water and play of lights fused with the catwalk rhythm giving life to an iconic Roman atmosphere. International Top models as Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid walked down the transparent catwalk placed on water during sunset time as floating fairies.
The fashion show was followed by a breath-taking dinner at Terrazza del Pincio in Villa Borghese, that hosts one of the most amazing landscape views of Rome. The guests walked through a corridor immersed in Karl Lagerfeld’s sketches since 1965, a special artwork called Gust of Wind conceived by the internationally renowned designer Paul Cocksedge Studio. An unexpected and circular “FENDI fountain” was constructed embracing the dinner venue to underline once again the profound and historic bond between FENDI and the roman fountains.
The dinner was followed by a special performance by Giorgio Moroder, an icon and live legend of the disco music, that has collaborated with the biggest stars on earth as Barbara Streisand, Freddy Mercury, Donna Summer and Daft Punk. He has an award winning record: 3 Academy Awards for the music of the famous movies Top Gun, Flashdance and Never Ending Story, 4 Grammy awards and 4 Golden Globes and more than 100 Gold and Platinum Records.
On 8 July, guests were invited to the preview of the exhibition FENDI ROMA – The Artisans of Dreams at Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana’s first floor, designated to host exhibitions open to the public throughout the year, followed by a brunch on the terrace of the first floor ofPalazzo della Civiltà Italiana. The exhibition, open to the public starting from 9 July, is conceived to celebrate the Maison’s unique craftsmanship and creativity, founding and distinctive elements of the luxury Roman House core values.
FENDI also presents the ultimate sublimation of the Peekaboo bag and the Selleria line with the exceptional PEEKABOO 90 YEARS,designed by Silvia Venturini Fendi, a one-of-a-kind bag entirely made by hand in only 60 pieces, created to celebrate the 90thanniversary of the Maison. With the most ancient techniques of the Roman master saddlers, the PEEKABOO 90 YEARS, is sold exclusively in the Palazzo FENDI boutique in Rome, starting from July 2016.
Special windows have been developed exclusively for the Palazzo FENDI boutique to celebrate the 90 years of the Maison where special paper craft techniques are used to illustrate the story of the Maison, where suitcases become the cover of a giant books and paper miniatures, examples of fine craftsmanship, represent the five Fendi sisters, Karl Lagerfeld and Silvia Venturini Fendi.
FENDI, together with Karl Lagerfeld and Silvia Venturini Fendi, celebrated on this occasion, 90 years of the Maison’s great revolutionary worldwide achievements, avant-garde experimentation, unlimited research and innovation, proposing new luxurious and modern fur designs and accessories.

Hawaiian Airlines Insider’s Guide: Maui
Born and raised on the island of Oahu, Gerraine Nakama joined Hawaiian Airlines as a reservations agent in 1991. Today, she welcomes passengers traveling in and out of Maui’s Kahului Airport as a customer service agent. Gerraine calls the Valley Isle her home and loves to offer local tips for travelers.
What do you love the most about Maui?
Known as The Valley Isle, Maui’s tranquility makes it an ideal escape for relaxation away from the busy city life. Hawaiian Airlines offers several quick flights from Honolulu to Kahului throughout the morning, day and evening. It is no wonder Maui is consistently named among the world’s best islands!
What’s the one thing you can’t miss when visiting this island?
The beautiful and unforgettable sunrise at Haleakala Crater. The drive up to the crater through winding roads and the clouds offers breath-taking views. The picturesque bicoastal views feel like heaven on earth.
What’s Maui’s best kept secret?
The Lava tubes and stunning waterfalls deep in the east Maui Mountains. Watch for these waterfalls on the road to Hana.
What’s your favorite sightseeing spot?
‘Īao Valley: A beautiful lush rainforest and state park located at the end of ‘Iao Valley Road, west of Wailuku. Rich with Hawaiian history, the valley is where The Battle of Kepaniwai took place in 1790. There is nothing like hiking up to the ‘Iao Needle Lookout trail and ethno botanical loop, pausing for a picnic and swimming in the clear, cool stream waters.
What’s the hot spot locals are going to right now?
Big Beach, a wide sandy beach over a mile long in Makena on Maui’s south shore. By night fall, I recommend going to Three’s Bar and Grill to unwind and listen to live local music.
The Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort, which is tucked in a very secluded area in Makena south of Maui.
Best places to eat?
Locals love the little hole in the wall restaurants. Sam Satos in Wailuku is one of my favorites, known for their delicious dry mein seasoned noodles and local dishes. It’s difficult to find, so you’ll hardly see a rental car on the parking lot!
Best places to shop?
The Outlets of Maui in Lahaina has a lot to offer. If you want to walk around and have lunch, just spend the day at Kaahumanu Shopping Center. There’s a food court on the second floor, as well as name brands such as Victoria’s Secret and Bath and Body Works.
Any recommendations for families traveling with children?
The Maui Ocean Center is a great experience for children to walk through the 750,000-gallon Open Ocean Exhibit inside a 54-foot tunnel. Featuring Hawai‘i’s sharks, turtles, and thousands of tropical fish, it has been named among the top 25 best U.S. aquariums by TripAdvisor.
Best outdoor activities on the island?
The whale watching tours during our peak whale season – Dec. 15 to April 15 – are a must! You can experience whales from shore but nothing compared to the thrill of seeing these gentle giants emerge from the water right next to your boat and swim directly under you.
Best tip for travelers passing through Kahului Airport?
While passing through Kahului airport, stop by Sammy’s Bar and Grill for a picture of the big gorilla outside the entrance. In the mood for dessert? Pinkberry Yogurt is the airport employees’ favorite. If time permits, a five-minute cab ride gets you to Hawaii’s only Krispy Kreme doughnut shop.
What do you love most about Hawaiian Airlines?
The feeling of being in a ’Ohana (Family) and the Aloha spirit that is evoked in the hearts of the employees. Working as a team to care for our guests who arrive in Hawaii from all over the world is extremely rewarding.
What’s your favourite Hawaiian Airlines destination?
We now fly to so many exciting countries and cities that it’s hard to pick one – but Tokyo is on the top of my list! I love the Japanese culture and traditions, the friendliness of the people, enjoying the delicious ramen, and of course the shopping; you can find almost everything you need and more. Visiting a Daiso store is a must!
About Hawaiian Airlines:
Hawaiian Airlines offers direct service from Auckland to Honolulu three times a week, departing on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, and operates approximately 160 jet flights daily between the Hawaiian Islands, with a total of more than 200 daily flights system-wide.
Hawaiian® has led all U.S. carriers in on-time performance for each of the past 12 years (2004-2015) as reported by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Consumer surveys by Condé Nast Traveler, Travel + Leisure and Zagat have all ranked Hawaiian the highest of all domestic airlines serving Hawai‘i.
Now in its 87th year of continuous service, Hawaiian is Hawai‘i’s biggest and longest-serving airline, as well as the largest provider of passenger air service from its primary visitor markets on the U.S. Mainland. Hawaiian offers non-stop service to Hawai‘i from more U.S. gateway cities (11) than any other airline, along with service from Japan, South Korea, China, Australia, New Zealand, American Samoa and Tahiti.

DANNY PATO NAMED 2016 HAIR EXPO AWARDS NEW ZEALAND HAIRDRESSER OF THE YEAR
Ponsonby stylist takes top trophy in NZ and Australia’s premier hairdressing awards
The most prestigious award in hairdressing, the Schwarzkopf Professional Hair Expo Awards New Zealand Hairdresser of the Year was last night awarded to Danny Pato of D&M Hair Design in Ponsonby – a first-time winner.
The annual awards are the final night highlight of Hair Expo Australia, the largest hairdressing event in the southern hemisphere which was staged for the first time this year in Melbourne over the Australian Queen’s birthday long weekend. Danny received his trophy at a spectacular gala ceremony in The Plenary event centre on Monday 13th June, hosted by TV personality, Richard Reid.
Celebrating their 31st anniversary this year, the annual Schwarzkopf Professional Hair Expo Awards are the longest running and most respected awards in the New Zealand and Australian hairdressing industry. They set the industry standard in the region and represent the pinnacle of hairdressing excellence in the southern hemisphere.
The strength of the Hair Expo NZ Hairdresser of the Year award lies in the fact that unlike any other industry award, it is based 50/50 on a photographic collection as well as on a year of service to the industry plus business performance. The end result is that the recipients of the awards in represent not only the best, most creative hairdressers of our region but are also industry leaders with the highest possible levels of personal integrity.
“The Hair Expo Awards are an engine of excellence for hairdressing”, says Julia Erben, Hair Expo Event Director. “For over three decades, they have created an independent platform for the best of the best in our industry to showcase their talent to their peers and to the rest of the world”.
This year’s awards were judged by an illustrious panel of twelve international judges and twenty-five from Australia and New Zealand, comprising a global who’s who of the hairdressing industry. And for the first time, this year, the winners of both Australian and New Zealand Hairdresser of the Year were awarded funding to stage a show at Salon International in London, Europe’s premier hairdressing event.
The awards gala wrapped up the 31st year of Hair Expo Australia – the largest hairdressing trade industry showcase in the southern hemisphere. 2016 was a record year for visitor numbers with over 10,000+ visitors from around the region and interstate as well as overseas. Having staged the show in Melbourne this year for the first time, Hair Expo will return to Sydney in 2017 at the ICC in Darling Harbour from 10-12 June 2017.

Mystery shop finds beauty therapists wrongly removing skin lesions
A Consumer NZ mystery shop found seven beauty clinics willing to remove a raised skin spot, when our undercover shopper should have been sent to a GP.
Shoppers visited 46 clinics across the country. The majority of clinics did the right thing and said our shoppers should see a GP but seven clinics in Auckland were willing to use a variety of treatments to take off a raised lesion on our shopper’s arm.
Our shopper had dermal melanocytic naevi, which can be removed once correctly diagnosed but looks similar to types of skin cancer.
Four of the Auckland clinics – Ametrine Rose Health & Beauty, The Eye & Face Institute, Parisian Clinic and Beauty Forever – offered to use a laser treatment on the spot. Amax Laser Hair Removal offered to cut it out and Laser Clinics New Zealand offered a skin-needling treatment. At Q Medispa in Onehunga Heights, our shopper was told the clinic would soon have a machine that would “electrocute” off the spot.
Ametrine Rose and The Eye & Face Institute said staff would receive training as a result of our mystery shop. Parisian Clinic’s owner said “the whole industry needs to be trained better”. Beauty Forever declined to comment on our findings and the three other clinics did not respond to our emails and calls.
Consumer NZ chief executive Sue Chetwin said the risk of beauty clinics offering treatment was that staff might not recognise the spot as a symptom of skin cancer.
“Given New Zealand’s high skin cancer rate, we think beauty therapists should steer clear of this type of treatment and leave diagnosis to the doctors,” Ms Chetwin said.
Auckland Council’s health and hygiene code of practice states only health practitioners should remove skin lesions. Members of the New Zealand Association of Registered Beauty Therapists are also prohibited from removing unidentifiable lesions and skin tags without permission from a medical practitioner. However, membership is voluntary. None of the clinics that offered a treatment to our Auckland shopper were members of the organisation.
More information is available at consumer.org.nz and in the June issue of Consumer magazine.
Much-loved New Zealand brand Em’s Power Cookies continues sustained energy mission with new look packaging
Em’s Power Cookies, arguably New Zealand’s most-loved natural energy bars maker, is forging ahead with new-look packaging on its mission to get more kiwis eating food on the go that tastes good, is healthy and provides sustained energy.
Em’s Power Cookies is the business of trained nutritionist and multi-sport icon Emily Miazga. Emily, who lives on the West Coast, has won the New Zealand Coast to Coast World Multisport Championship three times and has a lifelong passion for promoting healthy eating.
“Food needs to taste good and be natural, healthy and provide slow-burning energy,” says Emily. “Our cookies and bars certainly reflect that philosophy. We only use real, quality ingredients – the kind you would find in your own kitchen.”
New Zealand-made Em’s Power Cookies certainly has its share of ardent fans, including Cameron Brown (12-times champion of Ironman New Zealand), Hayden Roulston (NZ Olympic cycling medallist) and Kim Hurst (WEMBO 2014 Champion and Karapoti MTB record holder).
“Our cookies and bars are beneficial for anyone who needs sustained energy – you don’t need to be a multisport athlete to enjoy them. They are like a log on the fire for your body. They appeal to anyone wanting a delicious and satisfying snack. From busy parents, sporty kids and tradespeople to trampers – anyone who is active and loves good food will love Em’s Power Cookies.”
Em’s Power Cookies’ new packaging is designed to illustrate the company’s use of great, natural, GMO-free ingredients.
“Our great cookies and bars haven’t changed on the inside. You won’t find soy protein, whey protein additives, superflous vitamin or mineral additives, or preservatives and colourings in our products and we source as many ingredients as possible from New Zealand.”
“We chose softer colours for our new packaging to inspire a more natural look and feel. We used real food ingredient imagery to represent the key features of each product and to set apart the variants. The twisting fern device represents a trail to take you on your adventures, and of course the fern is a quintessential representation of New Zealand.”
About Emily Miazga
Emily was born and raised in Saskatchewan, Canada and started making yummy cookies at age 14. She has always been a plant-based carbohydrate proponent (vegetarian since 1986). Her interest in nutrition and sport led her to compete in track and cross-country at University level in the USA and earned her a Master’s degree in Dietetics and Nutrition. After practicing as a Registered Dietitian in Oregon for four years, she left her job to travel in 2002. She stumbled into adventure racing while traveling and first competed in the Coast to Coast in 2004.
