Casino weddings: are they all they’re cracked up to be?

Casino weddings: are they all they’re cracked up to be?

Casino weddings: Are they all they’re cracked up to be?

Little Chapel of the Flowers
Little Chapel of the Flowers

A recent business report from the Horseshoe Casino in Cincinnati showed that the casino had suffered its lowest revenue in its whole existence this October.

The casino managed to gross just $13,956,000 during the month, trailing the other large casino in the region, Lawrenceburg, which grossed $14.1 million. The total is the lowest since December 2013, when the casino grossed $14.2 million, and casino owners are blaming a multitude of sources for the drop in revenue. For one, people are turning to online alternatives like Gamingclub.com/nz/online-pokies while others are just looking for fun elsewhere.

In response to this, the casino is expanding its customer offering by echoing what’s made Vegas so famous: a whole lot of wedding chapels. It beggars the question then, what is it about casino weddings that makes them so popular?

Indeed, the majority of them may end up in regret and swift divorce – think Britney Spears and Jason Alexander in 2004. However, for the serious, and sober, amongst us, there has to be some appeal to the casino wedding. After all, why would Vegas have so many wedding chapels if it wasn’t a popular option?

Hangovers we’d rather forget aside, casino weddings do have a huge potential for fun – for one, the Las Vegas chapels certainly don’t scrimp on the décor. From flowers to hot desert backdrops, the celebrants will do their best to make sure your special day looks amazing.

And of course, there’s always the gaming element. Vegas is a huge function room in itself, so there are plenty of options for entertainment. If you feel like something different, you could get married on the world famous Roller Coaster at the New York New York hotel for a little thrill. Once the ceremony’s over, take your friends and family around the gaming rooms – it’s one thing to go home with the memory of the wedding, but another to tell friends how much money you’ve won!

Of course, on the flip side, a casino wedding does have its fair share of flaws, particularly within Vegas. With so many hotels available, it might sound good to be spoilt for choice, but could this lead to the potential ire of your guests? Moreover, if you’ve a gambling addict in the family, a casino wedding could be the worst thing for them.

In summary, there are definitely benefits to having a casino wedding, but they are best reserved for the kind of couple who like to live life on impulse – chances are then, that your friends will be the same, so you can all afford to take a little risk.

Why are Women Crabby?

Why are Women Crabby?

Why are Women Crabby?

The source of this piece is unknown – it’s one of those beauties that lands in your email inbox and you just know you have to share it. I laughed my socks off – and then realised the only step they’d missed in a woman’s excruciating journey was planning a wedding!

We started to ‘bud’ in our blouses at 9 or 10 years old only to find that anything that came in contact with those tender, blooming buds hurt so bad it brought us to tears. So came the ridiculously uncomfortable training bra contraption that the boys in school would snap until we had calluses on our backs.

Next, we get our periods in our early to mid-teens (or sooner). Along with those budding boobs, we bloated, we cramped, we got the hormone crankies, had to wear little mattresses between our legs or insert tubular, packed cotton rods in places we didn’t even know we had.

Our next little rite of passage was having sex for the first time which was about as much fun as having a ramrod push your uterus through your nostrils (IF he did it right and didn’t end up with his little cart before his horse), leaving us to wonder what all the fuss was about.

Then it was off to Motherhood where we learned to live on dry crackers and water for a few months so we didn’t spend the entire day leaning over Brother John. Of course, amazing creatures that we are (and we are), we learned to live with the growing little angels inside us steadily kicking our innards night and day making us wonder if we were preparing to have Rosemary’s Baby.

Our once flat bellies looked like we swallowed a whole watermelon and we pee’d our pants every time we sneezed. When the big moment arrived, the dam in our blessed Nether Regions invariably burst right in the middle of the mall and we had to waddle, with our big cartoon feet, moaning in pain, all the way to the ER.

Then it was huff and puff and beg to die while the OB says, ‘Please stop screaming, Mrs. Hear-me-roar. Calm down and push. ‘Just one more good push’ (more like 10), warranting a strong, well-deserved impulse to punch the %$#*@*#!* hubby and doctor square in the nose for making us cram a wiggling, mushroom-headed 10 pound bowling ball through a keyhole.

After that, it was time to raise those angels, only to find that when all that ‘cute’ wears off, the beautiful little darlings morphed into walking, jabbering, wet, gooey, snot-blowing, life-sucking little poop machines.

Then come their ‘Teen Years.’ Need I say more?

When the kids are almost grown, we women hit our voracious sexual prime in our early 40’s – while hubby had his somewhere around his 18th birthday.

So we progress into the grand finale: ‘The Menopause,’ the Grandmother of all womanhood. It’s either take HRT and chance cancer in those now seasoned ‘buds’ or the aforementioned Nether Regions, or sweat like a hog in July, wash your sheets and pillowcases daily and bite the head off anything that moves.

Now, you ask WHY women seem to be more spiteful than men, when men get off so easy, INCLUDING the icing on life’s cake: Being able to pee in the woods without soaking their socks…

So, while I love being a woman, ‘Womanhood’ would make the Great Gandhi a tad crabby. You think women are the ‘weaker sex?’ Yeah right!

Equality Regardless

Equality Regardless

equalityWe all remember the opening scene of Sex in the City 2 where Stanford marries Anthony in a wedding extravaganza – a palette of black and white, with swans swimming in a moat complete with a bridge for guests to walk across to the ceremony. Stanford entered to the sound of a beautiful choir backed by an orchestra and was greeted by their marriage celebrant, Liza Minnelli. Finishing the ceremony with a bang, Liza delivered the perfect ballad. Is this how we imagine all gay weddings? One thing is for sure – they do have style and know how to throw a pretty good party!

Growing up, two of my closest friends were gay. They were, and still are, two of the nicest people I know. Twenty years ago this was a taboo subject, and I experienced how rough and bumpy this journey can be. Same sex couples have now become more widely accepted as part of daily life. Popular TV shows like Shortland Street, Go Girls and now the widely debated Mitre 10 Dreamhome all feature gay or lesbian relationships. New Zealand sweethearts like Tamati Coffey and Alison Mau have spoken out as advocates in the gay community to have their relationships acknowledged, and for acceptance of that special person they have chosen to share their life with.

New Zealand is now the 13th country to legalise same sex marriage – on 19 August it became legal for couples of the same sex to formalise their relationships. While this has been the topic of much debate, new businesses and directories have popped up all over the place to capitalise on the opportunity.

It’s an historical moment in our history, showing we’re progressive and able to move with the times. This Bill means identical rights, fairness, choice and equality for couples who have long wanted to have their relationships formalised. While a civil union has been available, it’s not the same as a marriage which has a more significant meaning.

Marriage is a legal union between two people where a relationship is acknowledged and formalised in a legal way.
It is a celebration with loved ones who want to be a part of and share in the joining of these two lives, irrespective of orientation or gender. With many same sex couples already living together and already having made a commitment, the Bill gives them the ability to have the same rights as any other couple getting married. We live in a modern society and, as such, this is a natural progression. We continue to evolve through change and this is another step towards equality.

Since Australian couples still don’t have the option to marry there, the opportunities for the local economy and tourism sector are significant. It opens doorways to showcase New Zealand on the world stage and draw new visitors to our country.

These are exciting times and we look forward to the journey ahead and being part of many more couples’ big days.

Aaron Bloomfield, a marriage celebrant and the front man behind gayweddingnz.com said: “It’s about the progress of equality. The ability for same sex couples to now marry means it’s a day that will be infused with so much emotion that they’ve finally made it”.

Chris Dillon, owner and lead photographer at Dillon Photography said: “In 21 years we’ve shot hundreds of weddings. The only thing that’s the same in every single wedding is the celebration of love between two people. Same sex weddings aren’t new to us – we’ve never called them civil unions. To us, no matter who is marrying whom, a wedding always has been, always will be, a marriage.”
