REAL WEDDING: Aubrey & Jonathon

REAL WEDDING: Aubrey & JonathonREAL WEDDING: Aubrey & Jonathon

Bride Aubrey Jessica Speakman Groom Jonathon Paul Chaplin Date of Wedding 14th April 2012

The proposal: June 22nd 2011- I (Aubrey) knew the ring was in the process of being made – dad had given Jono my Great Gran’s ring to use to make a new ring. Jono told me it was another two months from being ready. The very next night he took me out for dinner, then we went to the petrol station for hot chocolates and lollies. I suggested we go to Sulphur Point. This was where Jono had first told me he knew I was the one. What I didn’t know was that Jono was planning on taking me there anyway. I was cold and went to put my hands into his hoodie pocket. He pushed my hands out …I thought, what’s in his pocket? He got down on one knee on the beautiful waterfront under the stars and said “Aubrey Jessica Speakman, will you marry me?” I couldn’t stop giggling for about an hour I was so happy!

Venue: We were married at Mission Estate Winery, Napier, a beautiful estate overlooking a stunning view of Napier. Both the grounds and building are amazing! It’s a second home to Aubrey, as her family has all worked there over the years and she grew up dreaming of being married there. Our reception was also held at Mission Estate in the old restored chapel with beautiful high ceilings, amazing food and excellent service.

Minister: Our own pastor, David Dishroon, a great friend and mentor to both of us. He ran the service so smoothly, and it was great to have someone who knew us both and our journey together.

Photographers: Bruce Jenkins was our main photographer on the day. We also had our good friend Megan Warn taking photos for us. It was great to have two different people taking photos as you got a great variety of things captured. Aubrey’s dad, Tony Speakman edited the photos, and made our album. He is a photographer but wanted to be Father of the Bride for the day!

Theme: Vintage/ Romantic mixed with our huge love for music.

Bride’s Dress: A beautiful strapless Ella gown with flowing chiffon, off-white and pulled to the side with diamante flower detail. It was purchased in a half price sale from Vanilla Bridal, Tauranga. She also wore her great grandmother’s pearls around her neck which was her something old; and Jono’s sister’s veil was her something borrowed.

Groom’s attire: A classic black suit with a light pinstripe, purchased at Hallensteins. A waistcoat and tie, white with a silver pattern, were hired from Munns Menswear in Hamilton. He didn’t let Aubrey see what he was wearing until the wedding day!

Bridesmaids’ dresses: Midnight blue, V-neck dresses pulled in around the waist with beautiful ruffled skirts, ordered online from China. This was a nightmare as we had to get them adjusted several times and they were only just ready the day before the wedding! I don’t recommend it! They also wore classic pearl jewellery.

Groomsmen’s attire: The same suits as Jono from Hallensteins (they got a great deal buying together), with black waistcoats, white shirts with midnight blue ties to match the girls dresses. Each of the boys had a music related cufflink matching the instrument they play.

Flowers: We adored our vintage/romantic flowers from Natasha and team at The Flower Barrow, Taradale. Roses in pale shades of pink, peach, mauve and cream, wrapped in blue or cream ribbon. My bouquet had my grandmother’s brooch pinned to it – my something blue. Everyone commented on how beautiful the bouquets were. They also did the flowers for our centrepieces, the display at the ceremony and petals for the guests to toss.

Hair and Make up: Aubrey’s hair and makeup was by the Visage team in Taradale. Our friend Ann-Marie, also a hairdresser, did the bridesmaid’s hair and one of the bridesmaids did all of their makeup.

Cake: Our amazing three-tiered cake was by Debbie at Sweet Art, Havelock North. The top tier was gluten and dairy free chocolate flavour, followed by a chocolate mud layer and a vanilla layer. It was a music-themed cake with the music score of “I’m Yours” (our song) wrapped around it, topped with a bride figurine with a microphone looking up at the groom figurine with his guitar.

Décor: June from A Touch of Elegance designed and set up the most magical setting for the ceremony and reception. Incredible fairy lights and hanging bead curtains shone from the ceiling; romantic lanterns and candle holders, pearls and beautiful fabrics sat on the tables. She provided chair covers and ribbon, and an amazing backdrop behind the bridal table. Oh my goodness she did it all and it blew us away! Mission Estate provided plates, tablecloths, napkins, cutlery etc and arranged the seating and menus for us.

Stationery: Aubrey’s dad is a talented graphic designer and made all our stationery. He made us our own logo and “I’m Yours” slogan which went on everything. We stuck to the same colours, light pink and black, added the musical element where we could and the amazing Kieran McKinaly printed it all perfectly. Our table names were guitar brands and shaped as that guitar would be. There were musical touches through everything!

Entertainment: Dusk2Dawn was amazing, providing sound, lighting and DJ. We also had a group of friends from our church who we play in a band with. It was fun having our friends jam for us!

Transportation: It’s who you know! Friends and family asked around and we ended up with a V8 Holden commodore Ute as the main bridal car and two other Holden Commodores to borrow for the day no charge. We were stoked as these are our favourite cars!

Catering: Mission Estate provided everything from finger food to drinks and main meals. Everyone was handed champagne as soon as we got back up the aisle. The food was delicious and the service was spot on.

The service: We wrote our own vows straight from the heart. They were so beautiful and special; we’ll never forget that moment! We chose songs that were “our songs”, sung a worship song to God and my little brother Joshua did a bible reading for us. “I’m Yours” Played as we signed the register, our song for the day! Our parents came up and prayed over us and our marriage, which was special.

Most memorable moment of the day: Reading our vows to each other. Aubrey cried so much she sniffled all the way through reading them! They were from the heart. Jono also enjoyed driving a V8! Mostly just having a huge fun party with all of our family and friends all together in one place!

Family/Friends: Our nephew and nieces did a wonderful job as flowergirls and pageboy. It was so special seeing them walk down the aisle guided by Jono’s sister Kelly. Aubrey’s mum being the wedding co-ordinator at the Mission Estate was very handy! She was amazing and co-ordinated everything, finding us the right businesses to work with. Aubrey’s brother Alistair was our MC and was both organised and hilarious! Both of our families were really great help and support, as were our bridesmaids and groomsmen. Don’t be afraid to lean on people and ask for help – most friends and family just want the best and for you to have the best day possible.

Memorable: We let off Chinese lanterns with our guests over the lookout before we left the reception. It was fun and made for great pictures. We co-ordinated a surprise bridal party dance using a few modern songs straight after our first slow dance – hilarious! Aubrey and her mum went to the hair salon together for a couple hours the morning of the wedding – it was great to spend some quality time together. We had a photobooth with funny props and the guests put a copy of their photos and a message into a special book – great to look through and fun to do. As a surprise Aubrey’s mum set up a sweet bar with lollies and lolly bags for everyone to help themselves to. This was a huge hit with the guests! Seeing it all come together after months of planning makes everything so worth while! ♥
