The Proposal: It was 5 September 2010, Father’s Day. We were in bed at home and had just found out we’d won a wedding dress. We went shopping for rings. Then that night, we invited my dad around so that Shaun could ask him for my hand.
Ceremony & Reception: We chose the Meeanee Hotel in Napier, a nice rural pub with a lovely garden setting, yet close to town. They provided a fabulous buffet menu, too!
The Service: It was a short service, but very meaningful. I was welcomed with a traditional Maori greeting and then “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” played as I walked down the aisle.
Bride’s Dress: I was the very fortunate winner of the subscriber prize in a previous issue of My Wedding, and was allowed to select a gown from the selection at City Bridal to the value of $2,000.
Groom & Groomsmen’s Attire: Shaun hired a suit from Chris Wiig Suit & Menswear in Napier, opting for a Bafta suit, silver waistcoat and yellow tie. The groomsmen wore the same.
Celebrant: Amy Edwards was a good laugh. She had the same personality as us and understood exactly what we wanted from our wedding.
Photographer: Clive from Digital Icing Videography & Photography was chosen at a wedding expo as he was extremely friendly and we liked his portfolio.
Theme: Yellow is my favourite colour, so the theme became black and yellow which goes so well together.
Décor: Keeping to our yellow and black theme, we chose table runners, chair sashes and chair covers with the aid of Jodie Brown at Bella Events. The pots on the table were found at Aaron’s Emporium. The flax heart and fresh flowers were designed by mum and me.
Flowers: Rhonda from Two Crafts made flax flowers for the bouquets, buttonholes and table centrepieces, all black and yellow. Flowers from the local supermarket were added to the centrepieces on the day.
Stationery: I made all the invitations and hard wrote the name cards. For our Thank You cards, we added a photo of us on our wedding day.
Hair & Makeup: Raymond Michael of RM in Napier did my hair, and Michelle Clarke of Missy Mu did a great job of my makeup.
Cake: We chose a custard slice decorated with a koru design on top that we ordered from Pie & Patty Pan Bakery. We also had a raspberry and white chocolate mud cake and bourbon mud cake that we ordered from Mandy Smith at MJ’s Cakes.
Entertainment: The hotel provided a jukebox and we also had a cousin who was a DJ.
Vehicles: We hired two yellow Holden Monaro’s from the local car club.
Memorable Moment: Seeing each other for the first time in our wedding garments.
Honeymoon: We’ve planned a trip to Australia to see family and friends and to take in the theme parks and, of course, shop!
Special Mentions: Thank you to my mum and dad for all their help with everything from finances to the finer details. Thank you also to Shaun’s parents for all their support. I have to thank our bridal party for their support, too, as well as our long friendships! Lastly, a big thank you to all our guests who helped make our day so special!
Final thoughts: I’d like to thank my wonderful husband for all the laughter we’ve enjoyed over the years and throughout the planning of our wedding. I love you so much! To our beautiful children – we would not be here if it wasn’t for you! Our love to you, always!
