GETTING MARRIED IN THE MALDIVES

GETTING MARRIED IN THE MALDIVES

GETTING MARRIED IN THE MALDIVES

GETTING MARRIED IN THE MALDIVESTHE MALDIVES – WHERE THE SANDS ARE AS WHITE AS THE SMILES OF THE LOCALS, WHERE FISH SWIM LAZILY IN THE WARM WATERS OF THE INDIAN OCEAN AND THE SUN’S RAYS ENGULF YOU. HEAVEN AWAITS YOU ON THE 1,190 CORAL ISLANDS AND 26 ATOLLS.

Visitors, irrespective of religion, cannot legally register their marriages in the Maldives. However, non-religious, purely ceremonial wedding events can be arranged by resorts for visitors upon request.

The wedding ceremony is spectacular as it is usually celebrated on the sprawling golden beaches with celebrations opening out onto the dazzling turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean.

Colourful lights often flood the area with soft hues, and you can order perfumed sprays of blooms, balloons and silk cloth hangings.

Spectacular hotels and resorts usually host weddings al fresco on the beaches or within the resort grounds. Most are positioned to face the ocean. Your wedding becomes an experience, unforgettable and worth cherishing, as gentle sea breezes caress your faces.

Couples are often treated to a serene massage on the morning of the wedding, before being met at their rooms by escorts, who then lead them to the wedding arena.

Traditionally attired drumbeaters can perform the local dance, Bodu-beru, after which the bride is presented with a specially made floral bouquet. The couple is usually encouraged to plant a coconut palm as a symbol of their eternal love and togetherness.

A drink of coconut water is offered to the couple after the marriage. An exquisite wedding cake is then cut, with champagne offered to all guests. The hotels usually provide a gourmet dinner of Chinese, Italian, Thai, and Indian dishes with an assortment of exotic wines, champagnes and fresh juices.

To cap the day off in complete serenity, you can indulge in a memorable yacht cruise. There’s also the option of a sunset catamaran cruise or a snorkelling safari.

As a honeymoon location, the Maldives is nothing short of spectacular…and romantic! Enjoy dinner under the stars, visit uninhabited islands, stay in private bungalows, lavish with in-room spa treatments, take a sea plane flight that hark back to a bygone era…you’ll be swept away!
